Spammers and scammers love hyperlinks. They often want to boost their search engine optimization or increase traffic by getting clicks from your site. Many times, they won’t post anything other than a link. This particular method has a sneaky way of getting past other stop spammers checks because it relies on other clues for detection. Many of the comments allowed on this website were of this variety. Without spam words, suspiciously fast responses, etc. etc., the comment looks safe to allow for review and publishing.
Check for URLs in Comments
With this new feature, stop spammers only needs to see a “URL” or “http” before it activates the safeguards. When check for any URLs is active, if stop spammers sees one and you have the second chance form enabled, your real visitors will be able to request access to be whitelisted so that they can post comments with links.
Where to find the URL checker
You can access this feature by navigating to the Block List page. The setting resides just under the URL shortener check. Enable the configuration called Check for any URLs.
